Pressure balanced expansion joints are designed to absorb axial, lateral and angular deflections or combinations. They absorb deflections and restrain pressure thrust developed by the use of tie rods, or similar devices.

Pressure balanced expansion joints can be divided into two main categories:
In line Pressure balanced assemblies. The annular cross-section of the two concentric bellows membrane forming the jacket is equal to the cross-section of the working bellows membrane. The pressure retaining structure can be external or internal construction Elbow type Pressure balanced assemblies
